Next week, in the days 27th to 31st of January, our little group of Wargamers in Vienna will be hosting our colleagues from the wargaming community in Scarborough, UK. A full program of sightseeing, dining and socializing is planned for our friends as we wish them a warm welcome to our city.
However, the main occasion is the grand battle that will be played out. Over the course of 3 days, 12 players will fight in 2 teams to recreate the bloodiest battle of the Napoleonic Wars, Borodino! For this event, thousands of figurines have been taken down from the shelves to create a historically accurate portrayal of participating nations: Russians, French, Polish, Italians, Spanish, Portuguese, will swarm the tabletop plains and forests. In addition, our 3D printing team has yet again exceeded all expectations and successfully produced the 4 historical “fleches” to help the Russians break the massive blue tide of the Grand Armée.
After many months of work developing the concept, Wargamer’s Vienna is now proud to present the first video caption of our busy battlefield. First up is the Battle of Halle Day 1.
Special thanks to Johannes W. and Andy W. for making this happen!
After the victory at Dresden, Napoleon is pursuing Blüchers Army of Silesia eastwards with his main army. Schwarzenberg, who has rallied the Army of Bohemia much faster than Napoleon thought, went for a second invasion of Saxony, besieging Leipzig and marching eastward to Dresden, following the French army. Napoleon gave Davout the order to collect as many troops as possible in Magdeburg and attack Schwarzenberg from the North. Meanwhile, Bernadottes Army of the North is slowly moving southwards from Potsdam. To screen his northern flank, Schwarzenberg ordered the Austrian Light Division and the Russian Avant Garde to take positions north of HALLE on both sides of the river Saale. On wednesday, 15th September 1813 around 1600 the fighting started near the village GIERSLEBEN.
Sometime in the early 1970s, three friends got together and tried their first Napoleonic battle, commanding brave Airfix plastic figures across a small table. Everything was very simple, the first set of rules was by Arthur Taylor (“the famous Little Green Book”). The first metal miniatures were bought and painted at the end of the 1970s. Minifigs,of course!
Then, the rules we used became more complex – Bruce Quarry and later Newbury Rules. Our first playroom was in the apartment of one of the players. Of course, still very small and modest.
We travelled through Vienna with our gaming table – to a total of seven different locations in apartments and basements, which were often cold and damp.
Over time more and more players joined. We bought terrain and figures, figures and more figures, now more than 28,000. Most of the Minifigs figures have been taken out of service and replaced with 28mm metal miniatures from all common manufacturers.
By fortunate coincidence (and our great friend the late Herbert Gratz) we got to know the legendary Wargames Holiday Center in Scarborough. We’ve been using In-The-Grand-Manner rules ever since.
In 2008 we discovered a wonderful room close to Schwarzenbergplatz. It was an ideal match for our requirements. One of us made himself (and therefore all of us) a present for his 50 th birthday and set it up as the Wargamers’ Paradise (abbr. “WP”) – we’ve been based there ever since.
We are now around 10 players with some more players who join us every now and then.
Join us on the Grand Campaign trail and read about the battles fought in Spain in our “What if” Iberian Campaign of 1808 and our German Road to Leipzig 1813.
We play by the “Rules in the Grand Manner” by Peter Gilder. Have a look at the rules and our collection of units in Our Arsenal.
You have an incredible opportunity to join in on the fun! Partake as a General on the battlefield and explore Vienna, the Military history museum, battlefields of Aspern Esling and Wagram. Check out our exciting 2 day program!
We love gettingget imersed in the battle and we appriciate good visials. We make our own 3D printed props which are available for you by supporting its crowdfunding.
